This two-part mantra you've come up with is so so beautiful. Reminds of a line from Manifesto: The Mad Farmer Liberation Front by Wendell Berry that I think about a lot: "Be joyful/though you have considered all the facts."

Both look interesting. There were posts a few months back on some other sites about another book that is more specifically about those maternity homes -- I think it was The Girls Who Went Away by Ann Fessler; I first heard about maternity homes/homes for unwed mothers last year when I read Grady Hendrix's Witchcraft for Wayward Girls.

I was also deeply relieved when I clicked on your headline and discovered that, no, the book that excited you so much was not "Atlas Shrugged."
